KRISTIN ANDERSON LCSW
No matter the issue, I want to help you thrive.
Specializing in the treatment of trauma - and all that comes with it.
I provide psychotherapy for different struggles you may be facing including trauma, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, shame, and relational issues. My work places an emphasis on both practical tools as well as attention to deeper wounds and emotions.
I aim to help you gain insight into yourself and discover ways to tap into the inner well of resilience inside of you. I offer a warm, empathetic, and non-judgmental space to explore the issues you are struggling with and help you discover new ways of living a more well-balanced life. My goal is to help you have the difficult things you’ve been through be a footnote, not the overall theme of your story.
My goal is to help you take control of your life’s narrative after trauma and cultivate a greater sense of agency in your life.
Techniques & Modalities
I draw heavily from cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and psychodynamic techniques, with an emphasis on both practical tools as well as focus on deeper wounds and underlying patterns. I use an eclectic approach and also intertwine elements of other modalities into my work including mindfulness & meditation techniques. I also am EMDRIA trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which can be a powerful adjunct to traditional talk therapy.
MY APPROACH
Whatever you’re looking to work on, my approach will be tailored to you.
Insight-Oriented Therapy (Psychodynamic)
Insight-oriented therapy is based on the belief that through increased consciousness we can create new life experiences. This therapeutic process involves the therapist and client exploring and gaining a better understanding of how feelings, beliefs, actions, and events from the past may be influencing our current mindset and circumstances. The goal of insight-oriented therapy is to empower you with a sense of clarity so that you have the freedom to make new, adaptive, and healthier choices that support your continuing growth.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
This form of psychotherapy is focused on addressing the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may be contributing to depressive symptoms. The research shows that CBT is a very effective form of treatment for a variety of mental health conditions including depression and is supported by the American Psychological Association as one of the best therapies for depression. Through compassionate and supportive care, I hope to create a safe space for you to feel comfortable in starting the process of examining and re-evaluating old thought patterns that may be getting in your way.
EMDR
EMDR is a research-backed type of psychotherapy that has been found to help with a variety of symptoms and traumatic experiences including single-event traumas (natural disasters, car accidents, etc.), interpersonal violence, sexual assault, childhood trauma, and complex trauma. During EMDR therapy, different forms of bilateral or dual awareness stimulation (usually a combination of visual, tactile, or audio) are used to help you to reprocess traumatic memories. This therapy uses the natural way our brains already have to recover from traumatic events and memories. I offer EMDR in NYC, both virtually and in person.
